War of 1812 - Deming Jarves

March through July 15

It has been two hundred years since the War of 1812, however it greatly influenced the industrial age in the newly formed United States of America. During the War Americans could not obtain goods, a result of embargoes, consequently Americans had to produce their own commodities. Among the growing demand was a need for glass, including windows, bottles, and tableware. As a result 14 glasshouses were established in the New England area between the years 1812 and 1814. Although few survived, their attempts laid the groundwork for their successors, among them the very prosperous Boston & Sandwich Glass Company.
Amid the soldiers in the War was Deming Jarves, founder of the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company. At almost 22 years of age, Jarves joined the Light Infantry Company of Boston called the New England Guard.
