French Cable Station Museum

John Murphy painting raffle

The French Cable Station Museum in Orleans was opened July 2 1972. This year, 2012 marks the 40th year the museum is open. To help us celebrate, John Murphy the well-known Cape Cod Artist is creating oil on canvas painting of the museum. The painting and 5 high quality digital copies (Giclée) will be donated to the museum and sold in a raffle. Only 600 tickets will be sold giving the buyer a 1 out of 100 chance of winning. Tickets are $10 each or three for $25.
Tickets may be purchased on our web site Frenchcablestationmuseum.org.
They will also be sold at the museum when the museum is open (see our website). The museum will be selling them at several local stores in Orleans on select days. More on where and when they will be sold will be posted here later.

Historic Boatbuilding Workshops – Intro to Lofting

February 15th-18th (3 nights, 1 day) 6pm - 9pm (2/15-2/17), 10am - 4pm (2/18)

The very basics of lofting for beginners. The course teaches how designers' lines are laid down in three dimensions in order for hull shapes to be lifted in full scale patterns. We will loft a 9' flat bottom skiff, learn to pick up bevels and develop transom bevels, all done with the simple drawing to scale.
Instructor: Tony Davis (of Arey's Pond Boat Yard)
Cost: $125 non-members, $100 CCMM Members

WSI: Wreck Scene Investigation

Back by popular demand! Examine and excavate the “remains” of a shipwreck. Map, record and identify the objects found, then use this information to find out more about the ship and her crew. Learn about some of the unique challenges faced by under-water researchers, not least of which is remembering to breathe! Also, discover the story and remains of the oldest recovered shipwreck in America “Sparrow Hawk.”

Long ago, sailors from Cape Cod traveled around the world on trading voyages. Learn how Scrimshaw & Sailors' Valentines came to Cape Cod in the 1800s. Make your own Scrimshaw ornament as the centerpiece of your design, then create a Sailors’ Valentine around it with colorful and organic shells on an octagon-shaped base.

Fishing Fun Friday

Cape Cod is home to lots of different kinds of fishing—from catching lobsters in a trap, to tuna & cod fishing and digging for clams. One of the ancient forms of harvesting fish is called weir fishing, from which our current exhibit Weir Fishing Rules gets its name. In this new program, learn about the Cape’s fishing technology by building your very own model lobster pots, fish weirs, lines, nets, poles, and rakes out of recycled materials found in nature and around the household. Can you make your models work?

Historic Boatbuilding Workshops – Intro to Boat Building

Tues. & Thurs., February 28th, March 1st - 22nd (8 nights) 6pm - 8pm

This is an entry-level course on boat building, which explores basic lofting, layout and terminology that goes with the construction of a ten-foot skiff. Each student will have the opportunity to build each part of the skiff themselves before it goes into the actual skiff. Students do not need prior experience with boat building, wood-working or tools to participate in this course--only the desire to explore something different!

This course is designed for the student who has an interest in building a boat on their own with no kits or pre-made construction materials. The course teaches how the designer's lines are laid down in three dimensions in order for hull shapes to be lifted in full scale patterns. Learn to understand offsets and how to fare a line. Learn the meaning of every line an architect uses to create a hull shape. It is here the real construction of the boat begins.
